21 DAYS · TOURISM OR VACATION

For 21 days of tourism, investigate the current tourist exemption and its entry conditions. This does not determine eligibility or guarantee admission.

Some details need confirmation or review. Recheck the official sources before relying on this checklist.

Underlying guidance manually checked: October 29, 2026. Completion does not guarantee a visa, extension or entry.

03 / WHEN TO PREPARE

Your preparation timeline.

Planning stages, not visa-processing deadlines. Follow the official TDAC portal for its submission window.

  1. Before Booking

    Start with the essentials

Check passport validity and applicable entry requirements before booking transportation and accommodation.

  2. Before Departure

    Before Leaving for Thailand

Prepare applicable travel and financial evidence. Recheck the official rules and current travel advisory. No visa-processing deadline is calculated here.

  3. TDAC Preparation

    Within the official pre-arrival window

Follow the official portal’s current instructions. Register each traveler, including children where required, and save the confirmation. No opening date is calculated without current verified guidance.

Official free TDAC website ↗ (opens in a new tab)
  4. Upon Arrival

    When you enter Thailand

Keep travel documents accessible. Check the admission-until date and permitted stay granted by Thai Immigration.

Important before you travel

The U.S. country page retains older exemption wording. Use the dated Thai guidance for entry rules and review the source discrepancy (Thai embassy / U.S. page). Confirm uncertain onward-ticket, extension and repeated-entry details with the Thai authority.

TDAC is free arrival registration, not a visa. Use the official portal ↗ (opens in a new tab); a new registration is normally needed for every traveler and entry.

04 / IF YOU WANT THE DETAILS

Official guidance, a section at a time.

Tourist Visa Exemption

Tourist visa exemption · up to 30 days

Eligible U.S. passport holders may enter for tourism for up to 30 days under the exemption effective September 15, 2026. This is conditional on meeting entry requirements; admission is decided by Thai immigration.

Thai Embassy · Washington (opens in a new tab)Manually checked

Passport validity

For an ordinary passport, Thai embassy guidance requires at least six months of validity on arrival. Confirm separately if you hold an emergency, temporary or other unusual travel document. Washington publishes different wording for temporary/emergency documents.

Return or onward travel

Carry evidence of your return or onward journey and funds for your stay; airline staff or immigration may ask to see them. Confirm that your ticket matches the permitted stay for your entry category. Do not rely on an unapproved extension to justify a longer itinerary.

Funds for visa-exempt entry

Washington lists adequate cash or equivalent of 20,000 baht per person or 40,000 baht per family for tourist visa-exempt entry. These entry funds are separate from visa-application bank-statement requirements. Confirm the form of evidence with the relevant authority.

Thailand Digital Arrival Card

One arrival card for each entry

Most foreign visitors entering by air, land or sea need a Thailand Digital Arrival Card, including infants and children. Submit within the three-day pre-arrival window, including arrival day, using the official portal. Normally register again for each entry. Transit without passing through Thai immigration and crew are exceptions.

Official submission is free. Save the confirmation and QR code; check each traveler’s details. Transit without passing immigration and crew are exceptions. Be cautious of paid registration sites.

Planning a Longer Training Trip?

Compare the purpose and documents for each route. No visa category is universally appropriate, and paying for gym classes does not automatically qualify you.

Tourist e-Visa · tourism & recreational learning

Tourist e-Visa

A Tourist Visa can allow up to 60 days per entry. Washington lists single-entry validity of three months from issue; this is the window to use the visa, not three months of stay. A further stay of up to 30 days may be possible only with an approved extension.

Thai Embassy · Washington (opens in a new tab)Manually checked

Recreational learning and boxing

Washington lists a Tourist Visa category for recreational learning, including boxing training. Its checklist adds an acceptance letter from the activity organizer. Confirm that your actual program fits this category; this does not establish that all training is permitted under tourist visa exemption.

Tourist Visa supporting evidence

Washington requests a passport, recent photo, current-location evidence, flight itinerary, accommodation evidence and three months of bank statements. Its listed balances are at least US$700 per person or US$2,000 per family for each month. Use your responsible consulate’s checklist; extra documents can be requested.

Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)

Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)

DTV includes qualifying Muay Thai activities. Five-year visa validity is separate from a stay of up to 180 days per entry, with a possible further 180-day extension subject to Immigration approval. It is not permission for an uninterrupted five-year stay, and it does not guarantee admission.

Los Angeles: Muay Thai DTV documents

Los Angeles requires an official SAT acceptance/support letter and documents from an SAT-certified boxing gym. It also lists three months of bank statements with an ending balance of at least 500,000 baht, location and residence evidence, a passport/photo and an FBI criminal certificate issued within three months.

Thai Consulate · Los Angeles (opens in a new tab)Manually checked

DTV requirements vary by mission

Washington’s DTV checklist also requires activity acceptance, financial evidence, residence evidence and recent criminal-record clearance. Its published checklist is not identical to Los Angeles’s SAT wording. Follow the responsible mission and verify all documents directly; paying for ordinary classes does not qualify you automatically.

Non-Immigrant ED Visa

Non-Immigrant ED for qualifying training

Los Angeles lists Muay Thai training under ED. Documents include financial support for tuition/living costs, an enrollment letter signed by the school’s authorized person with the signer’s ID, and a letter from the relevant Education Ministry authority or relevant organizations including SAT. Ordinary gym attendance alone does not establish eligibility.

ED stay and extensions: confirm your program

ED visa validity, admission and extensions are separate. The exact permission to stay and any extension depend on the approved program, documents and Immigration decision. Ask your provider and the responsible Thai authority for the applicable process before paying. A long course does not guarantee a matching long stay.

Supporting documents & consular jurisdiction

Apply through the responsible mission

Your state of residence determines the responsible U.S. Thai embassy or consulate. Check current residence/location requirements and the documents shown for your chosen purpose on the official e-Visa portal. Individual circumstances and additional requests can affect the process.

Extensions, repeated entries & your admission-until date

Extensions are applications, not promises

Washington describes a possible visa-exemption extension of up to 30 days, at the officer’s sole discretion. Apply before the permitted stay ends and confirm current restrictions with Immigration. Repeated visa-run patterns can lead to closer screening or refusal; do not add an assumed extension to your guaranteed stay.

Repeated entries and border crossings

Doha’s September 2026 guidance limits U.S. visa-exempt land/sea entries to twice per calendar year. London’s notice describes a twice-yearly exemption limit without that distinction. Official wording differs: confirm your travel history and crossing type with Immigration. Air travel does not guarantee admission or unlimited repeat entries.

Repeated entries: wording differs between missions

London’s September notice describes a twice-yearly exemption limit without specifying land or sea, while Doha’s revised page specifies land/sea checkpoints. These statements should not be treated as a personalized entry allowance. Confirm the applicable rule and your travel history directly with Thai Immigration.

Three dates, three meanings

Visa validity is the period in which the visa can be used. Permission to stay is the period granted after admission. The admission-until date records when that permission ends. Check the date recorded by Immigration after every entry; a visa’s expiry date does not replace it.

Frequently asked questions

Does a visa guarantee entry?

No. Thai immigration decides admission and the permitted period of stay. Check the admission-until date after entry.

Can I plan a stay longer than the exemption period?

Do not assume an extension will be approved. Investigate the appropriate visa before travel and confirm your onward-travel plans with your airline and Thai authority.

Does any Muay Thai gym qualify for DTV or ED?

No. Check the program, authority approvals and consular documentation. A normal gym booking is not evidence that all visa requirements are met.

Why do some official pages still say 60 days?

Some pages retain older guidance. The dated Thai embassy notice effective September 15, 2026 takes priority for this guide; the conflicting U.S. wording is identified above.

Do I need a new TDAC if I leave and return?

Normally yes, for each entry. Transit without passing through Thai immigration is an exception. Use the Immigration Bureau’s current instructions.

Official Sources & Important Updates

A source discrepancy to know about

The U.S. Thailand page still describes a 60-day visa-free threshold and an anticipated reduction. This guide uses the newer Thai embassy notice: 30 days from September 15, 2026. For entry rules, confirm with the Thai authority; the U.S. travel advisory is a separate safety assessment.
